NAC Eye Drops Are The "Russian Cataract Cure"
Researchers at the Helmholtz Eye Institute in Moscow, Russia, demonstrated that carnosine—n-acetylcarnosine, (NAC) available as eye drops, can slowly reverse existing cataracts and prevent new ones from forming. (Note: This is not the same thing as n-acetylcysteine, which is also sometimes abbreviated to NAC.)

Proteins make up a large par of the body. With age, proteins tend to face destructive changes from oxidation and interactions with sugars and aldehydes. These protein problems include oxidation, carbonylation, cross-linking, glycation, and end product (AGE) formation. These processes contribute to the aging process.
Cataracts are caused by glycation of proteins. Glycation happens when proteins react with sugars and form advanced glycation end products (AGEs). AGEs physically change proteins, DNA, and lipids, altering their chemical properties. As a Result, discoloration of the eye lens turns yellow and brown, which impairs vision.
Studies have shown that carnosine is effective against these protein modifications. When the NAC eye drops are used, carnosine competes for the glycating agent on the molecule, and protects cellular structures from aldehydes. There is evidence that carnosine can slow and help to prevent proteins from cross-linking and becoming cataracts, and they can break existing cross-links, too.
NAC acts as an antioxidant
When dropped on the aqueous humor, NAC acts as an antioxidant and enters the lens tissue, so it is particularly effective against potent free radicals, especially superoxides and the hydroxyls. The antioxidant role of L-carnosine (within the aqueous humor) may be a major factor in slowing and preventing the appearance of cataracts. There is also evidence that NAC may help in with eye disorders other than cataracts which are the result of oxidative stress such as: glaucoma, retinal degeneration, corneal disorders, ocular inflammation, complications of diabetes mellitus, and systemic diseases.3
